Data is entered in cells

To enter data, simply click on a cell and start typing

A cell cannot contain two different types of data

Once data is in a cell, if you start typing in the cell again, it overwrites the prior data

If you want to edit a cell, you must click on it and edit the data in the formula bar

The formula bar is used to enter equations (we will discuss this later in the module)

Once there is already data in the cell, there’s only one way of editing it or adding more and that is by using the formula bar.

If you start typing on the cell again, it overwrites the prior data

Example: Cannot put both dates and quantity


A dataset arranged in rows and columns is called a table

Tables are useful because they store information in an organized way and make it easy to retrieve information when needed

Tables are only useful when they can easily be read and analyzed by the user

Formatting the table is an important step in making tables useful


Qs: What if we want to find total expenses for electricity, water and internet in January. Can it be easily done with the data presented in this way?
