Understand the purpose and prepare in advance
Read materials provided so you can contribute
Understand your role
If you are not a key actor, only add points that the whole group needs to hear
Avoid unnecessarily lengthening the meeting
Provide your thoughts – you are there for a reason!
No matter your role, do not multi-task
This is distracting for everyone involved
Take notes when required and understand what is expected of you
Clarify your responsibilities, so you always leave knowing exactly what you need to do
Qs: What are some of the things an attendee can do?
1 – Always come prepared so you can contribute and help make decisions
2 – In each meeting you’ll have a different role – know that role and act accordingly.
- If you aren’t a key decision maker, ensure the points you bring up need to be heard by the whole group
- Do not hesitate though – if you have an opinion, voice it! Just make sure its relevant and on topic
3 – My biggest pet peeve is when you’re talking to someone and they are looking at their phone (both at work and at home!)
- Multi-tasking distracts everyone
4 – Again, leave the meeting being sure of what is expected of you
