Our choice of medium is often based on two factors:
Convenience
Our personal preference
These factors don’t always result in the best choice for the situation at hand
Choosing the most effective medium depends on much more than this
In our examples, the medium was already chosen for us, however choosing the appropriate medium is a big part of successful communication
We often default to what is easier for us, as opposed to those we are communicating with.
Consider two things when choosing your medium:
The preference of the person/audience receiving the message
Learn to ignore your first instinct
Stop, consider your options, then purposefully choose the right medium
Characteristics and benefits of speaking vs. writing
Analyze these and then select the best medium for the specific situation and message to be delivered
So thinking about the platinum rule, there are two things to consider when choosing your medium:
- Preference of the person / audience
-You will need to learn to ignore your first instinct
-Stop, consider options, then choose the right medium
- Think about the benefits of the two main mediums – speaking vs. writing
-Analyze these and then select based on the situation and your audience’s preference
