This represents a model showing how effective communications can be achieved. Although this may seem like a cumbersome process to go through, this model is used in some manner by many people in all of their communications.

The model has a sender and a receiver, who participate in 4 steps:

The models 4 steps are:

1.Send message – even at this step many problems can occur

1.For instance, the message may not be clearly communicated by the SENDER. This could be a function of the SENDER’s communication skills or even the effort that this person puts forth to communicate clearly

2.Hear + respond

1.Further issues can occur here, as we saw in the Ted Ed video. Noise, distractions or competition for the receivers attention.

3.Clarify

1.If the response from the receiver needs it, the sender clarifies what he/she means

4.Confirm

1.Finally, the receiver confirms the message

Although it might not be practical to formally go through each of these steps in the model in every communication you have with others, if you understand the idea and keep it at the back of your mind, it will significantly reduce misunderstandings.
